De-installing and recycling medical equipment usually takes anywhere from three to ten days to complete. The first step is disconnecting the miles of cable and components hooked up to the system. Next, Tom Gohn and his crew break down the equipment. One piece might weigh as little as 35 pounds while another weighs one ton. Finally, the parts must be removed from the hospital - ideally through the ceiling or with a crane - where they are hauled away by forklifts or trucks.
The greatest challenge of all, however, lies in not disturbing the patients. Aside from keeping the noise level at a minimum, the process requires adequate ventilation to eliminate the fumes. MRI's are often performed a mere twenty feet away while the MedREcycle team de-installs another machine. "It has to be like we're invisible," says Gohn.
